New Moon scores third highest opening weekend of all-time in US

The Twilight Saga: New Moon

Story by Jack Foley

THE Twilight Saga: New Moon has recorded the third best weekend opening of all time in America, taking a whopping $140.7 million.

The vampire sequel trails only Batman sequel The Dark Knight ($158.4 million) and Spider-Man 3 ($151.1 million) in the cash bonanza stakes – although it did set some of its own records in the process.

New Moon snagged both the best midnight gross ever, as well as best first day gross.

Ticket sales from Friday’s midnight opening amounted to $26.3 million, while for the full Friday they went up to $72.7 million, beating the $67.2 million grossed by The Dark Knight.

The figures are believed to have contributed to the second-best weekend ever at the American box office in terms of overall ticket sales, trailing only The Dark Knight‘s record breaking weekend last summer [2008].

Elsewhere at the box office, Sandra Bullock sports drama The Blind Side also overperformed, taking an estimated $34.5 million to clinch second spot, while animated adventure Planet 51 debuted with $12.6 million to claim fourth – just below disaster epic 2012, which took a further hefty $26.5 million in its second week of release. It’s total now stands at $108.2 million.
