A West End transfer for BIG The Musical

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

BIG the Musical will make its West End debut at the Dominion Theatre where it will run for a limited 9-week season – from September 6 to November 2, 2019.

The musical is based on the classic 1988 film starring Tom Hanks, which had two Academy Award nominations and is ranked as one of the funniest films of all time.

BIG the Musical follows the journey of twelve-year-old Josh Baskin, who hates being little. However, that changes one night at the carnival when a mysterious Zoltar machine grants Josh his wish to be big, and he becomes an adult!

Alone in New York, and trapped in an adult’s body, Josh tries to navigate a grown-up world where everything is all work with no play. Despite trying his hardest, Josh can’t help being himself – but just maybe he could teach the adults a thing or two…

The musical adaptation originally opened on Broadway in 1996 and was nominated for five Tony Awards. It transferred to the UK in 2016 and played in Plymouth and Dublin. The UK production starred Jay McGuinness, of boy band The Wanted, as lead character Josh, a role he’ll be reprising in the West End production.

Formerly one fifth of The Wanted who celebrated worldwide success with hits such as All Time Low and Glad You Came, Jay McGuinness stole the hearts of the nation as he took to the dancefloor with professional partner Aliona Vilani to become the 13th champion of Strictly Come Dancing in 2015. He can currently be seen at the Garrick Theatre in Rip it Up – The 60s, which celebrates some of the most iconic sounds, sights and events from that tumultuous period.

The production is directed and choreographed by Morgan Young (Elf the Musical).

BIG The Musical has songs by David Shire and Richard Maltby. Shire has created songs for a range of films and musicals, including parts of Saturday Night Fever while Maltby has penned lyrics for shows such as Miss Saigon and Ain’t Misbehavin’.

It has a book by John Weidman, who collaborated with Wicked creator Stephen Schwartz on Assassins and also wrote the book for Anything Goes.

Further casting will be announced in due course.

Also at the Dominion Theatre: the spectacular new Made at Curve production of Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, starring Danny Mac as Bob Wallace and Dan Burton as Phil Davis (November 15, 2019 to January 4, 2020).
