CASTING has been announced for Ellen McDougall’s new production of Suzan-Lori Parks’ play In the Blood, which runs at the Donmar Warehouse from Friday, April 17 to Saturday, June 6, 2020.

Nikki Amuka-Bird (pictured) will return to the Donmar in the role of Hester alongside April Koyejo-Audiger (Soprano), Paul Bazely (Doctor/Trouble), Ginny Holder (Welfare/Bully), Martins Imhangbe (Chilli/Jabber), Sinead Matthews (Amiga Gringa/Beauty) and Sule Rimi (Reverend D/Baby).

Hester will not give up the name of her child’s father. In a world that refuses to let you succeed, how far would you go to provide for your children?

Pulitzer Prize-winner Suzan-Lori Parks’ play is a striking take on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic American novel, The Scarlet Letter. It receives its first major UK production at the Donmar, directed by Ellen McDougall.

Nikki Amuka-Bird returns to the Donmar Warehouse after appearing in The Lady from the Sea in 2017 and World Music by Steve Waters in 2004. Other theatre credits include God Bless the Child, Birdland, Love and Information (Royal Court), The Trial of Ubu (Hampstead Theatre), Welcome to Thebes (National Theatre), DOUBT (Tricycle/Kiln Theatre) and Twelfth Night (Bristol Old Vic).

Her television credits include Zadie Smith’s NW, for which she was nominated for a BAFTA, Avenue 5, Gold Digger, Luther, Hard Sun, Small Island, Quarry, Inside No.9, House of Fools, Survivors, The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency, Torchwood, Robin Hood and The Line of Beauty. Her film work includes The Personal History of David Copperfield, The Laundromat, A Private War, The Children Act, Denial, Jupiter Ascending, Coriolanus, The Disappeared, Cargo and Almost Heaven.

Ellen McDougall makes her directing debut at the Donmar Warehouse with In the Blood. She is Artistic Director of the Gate Theatre, where her credits include Dear Elizabeth, Effigies of Wickedness, The Tale of the Unknown Island and Idomeneus.

Her other recent theatre credits include Our Town (Open Air Theatre), The Wolves (Theatre Royal Stratford East), Othello (Shakespeare’s Globe), The Remains of Maisie Duggan (Abbey Theatre, Dublin), The Glass Menagerie (Headlong), Anna Karenina (Royal Exchange, Manchester) and Ivan and the Dogs (Actors Touring Company/Soho).

In the Blood will be designed by Moi Tran, with lighting design by Azusa Ono and sound design by Helen Skiera. Composer is Orlando Gough and casting director is Anna Cooper CDG.
