Casting announced for The Globe's Romeo and Juliet

CASTING has been announced for Romeo and Juliet, the first production in Emma Rice’s 2017 summer season Summer of Love. Starring Edward Hogg as Romeo and Kirsty Bushell as Juliet, it runs at Shakespeare’s Globe from April 27 (previews from April 22) to July 9.

Edward Hogg’s previous work for Shakespeare’s Globe includes The God of Soho, The Storm, The Tempest and Measure for Measure. Other theatre includes The Rest is Silence (Brighton Festival/Northern Stage/London 2012 Festival), Our Class (National Theatre), Pictures from an Exhibition (Young Vic) and Woyzeck (Gate Theatre/New York).

His screen credits include White Lightnin’, Ollie Kepler’s Expanding Purple World, Anonymous, Jupiter Ascending, The Program, Kill Your Friends and Bunny and the Bull (film); Taboo, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, Harlots and Indian Summers (TV).

Kirsty Bushell’s recent theatre includes Boys will be Boys (Bush Theatre), Hedda Gabler (Salisbury Playhouse), Torn (Royal Court), Antigone (Barbican/Tour), I Know How I Feel About Eve (Hampstead Theatre), Belongings (Hampstead Theatre/ West End), The White Devil, Twelfth Night, The Comedy of Errors and The Tempest (RSC), Edward II, New Views 13, Edgar and Annabel and There is a War (National Theatre) and Angels in America (Headlong).

On television, she has appeared in Silk, Frankie, Silent Witness, True Love, Roger Roger, Injustice, FM and Pornography.

Joining them in Romeo and Juliet are Golda Rosheuvel (The Frontline, Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare’s Globe) as Mercutio; Ricky Champ (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Love’s Labour’s Lost, Hamlet, RSC) as Tybalt; Martina Laird (Julius Caesar, Henry IV, The Tempest, Donmar Warehouse) as Lady Capulet; Harish Patel (Rafta, Rafta, National Theatre) as Friar Lawrence; and Blythe Duff (DI Jackie Reid in Taggart) as the Nurse.

They in turn are joined by Jac Adu-Sarkodie, Siobhan Athwal, Tim Chipping, Keith Gilmore, Jonathan Livingstone, Sian Martin and Gareth Snook.

Romeo and Juliet is directed by renowned theatre and opera director, and Artistic Director of the English National Opera, Daniel Kramer, whose recent credits include Tristan and Isolde (ENO), Pélleas et Mélisande (Mariinsky and Bolshoi Theatre), Carmen (Vlaamse Opera, Opera North), Punch and Judy (Grand Théâtre Geneva, ENO – Outstanding Achievement in Opera, South Bank Award), Bluebeard’s Castle (Mariinsky and Bolshoi Theatre – Golden Mask Award, ENO), Pictures from an Exhibition (Sadler’s Wells/Young Vic), King Kong (Regent Theatre, Australia), Woyzeck (St. Ann’s Warehouse), Bent (Trafalgar Studios) and Hair (Gate Theatre).
