Full casting announced for Doctor Faustus at Shakespeare's Globe

FULL casting has been announced for Paulette Randall’s Doctor Faustus, which runs in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse from December 6, 2018 (previews from December 1) to February 2, 2019.

The line up includes Sarah Amankwah (as Valdes and Martino), Lily Bevan (Horse-Courser), Jocelyn Jee Esien (Doctor Faustus), John Leader (Robin and Cornelius), Louis Maskell (Benvolio and Dick), Pauline McLynn (Mephistopheles), Lucie Sword (Evil Angel), Mandi Symonds (Wagner) and Jay Villiers (Lucifer and Pope).

Sarah Amankwah’s previous theatre credits include Amadeus, The Threepenny Opera (National Theatre), The Crucible and Skriker (Royal Exchange). Television includes Black Earth Rising (BBC/Netflix) and ITV’s hit drama series Marcella. Amankwah also performed as Shenzi in the West End production of The Lion King between 2013 and 2015.

Alongside Doctor Faustus, Lily Bevan is also part of the ensemble of women writers performing in the Globe’s Dark Night of the Soul, an anthology of female responses to the Faustian myth. Bevan’s previous theatre credits include Trump’s Women (Brasserie Zedel/RADA) and Pheasant Plucker (Bush Theatre). She also wrote and performed Zoo at the Edinburgh Festival, which will transfer to Theatre 503 next month, and co-wrote and performed in the BBC Radio 4 series Talking to Strangers with Sally Phillips.

Jocelyn Jee Esien is an actor, writer and comedian best known for her BBC comedy sketch show Little Miss Jocelyn. Further television work includes Turn Up Charlie (Netflix), Upstart Crow, Gangsta Gran and Big School (BBC). Her theatre credits include One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show (Tricycle/Eclipse), Belong (Royal Court), Torn (Arcola) and Racing Demon (Chichester Festival Theatre). She has also just filmed the role of Tootsie in David Walliams’s The Midnight Gang, which will air on the BBC this Christmas.

John Leader returns to the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse after appearing in Gyre & Gimble’s Vivaldi’s Four Seasons: A Reimagining earlier this year. His other recent theatre work includes A Monster Calls (Old Vic), The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (West Yorkshire Playhouse) and Peter Pan (National Theatre).

Louis Maskell’s recent theatre work includes Flowers For Mrs Harris (Sheffield Crucible/Chichester Festival Theatre), The Grinning Man (Bristol Old Vic/Trafalgar Studios) and Fiddler on the Roof (Chichester Festival Theatre).

Pauline McLynn returns to the Globe having previously played the Queen in Cymbeline as part of Dominic Dromgoole’s final season (2015). Her earlier role in The Knight of The Burning Pestle (2014 and 2015) received critical acclaim. Although McLynn is best-known for her role as Mrs Doyle in the long-running comedy TV series Father Ted, her other screen credits include Dave Allen at Peace (BBC/RTÉ), Transformers: The Last Knight, Iris, Angela’s Ashes, Shameless (Channel 4), and EastEnders (BBC).

McLynn’s stage credits include Mother Courage and her Children (Albion Electric Warehouse), Daisy Pulls It Off (Park Theatre), East is East (Trafalgar Studios), Happy Days (Sheffield Crucible), Greener (Gaiety Theatre, Dublin) and Sixty-Six Books (Bush Theatre).

Lucie Sword graduated from RADA earlier this year. Her credits whilst training include Measure for Measure, The Tempest, The Trojan Women and The Way of the World (RADA).

Mandi Symonds’ recent theatre work includes Boom (Theatre 503), Night Must Fall (Salisbury Playhouse) and Duncan Macmillan and Robert Icke’s production of 1984 (Nottingham Playhouse/Almeida/West End). Television work includes Casualty, Doctors (BBC) and Dream Stuffing (Channel 4).

Jay Villiers’ recent stage work includes Quiz (Chichester Festival Theatre/Noel Coward Theatre), Skylight (Theater Clwyd) and Accolade (St James’ Theatre). Television includes New Blood, War and Peace, Father Brown (BBC) and Mr Selfridge (ITV). Films include Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool, The Sea and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

Doctor Faustus is a cautionary tale that examines the very nature of human curiosity and our unparalleled thirst for knowledge.
