Open - Above the Stag Theatre

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

REAL life couple, playwright Christopher Adams and actor Timothy Allsop, will revive Open, their acclaimed and revealing show about their open relationship, at Above The Stag Theatre from April 8 to May 9, 2020.

I’m Chris.
I’m Tim.
We’ve been together nine years.
During that time Chris has slept with 62 people.

Chris and Tim are married, but like nearly 50% of gay couples, they’re in an open relationship. In their acclaimed and startlingly frank show, they explore the complexities of their relationship, and their love, jealousy and desire for each other – and for many more besides!

Packed with shrewd and funny observations, and drawing on Grindr chats and interviews with former lovers, Open is about both the pride and shame of being sexually open, and asks: in a time of marriage equality, visibility and respectability, what does it mean to do things your own way?

Open was first seen at the Vaults Festival in 2019. It is written and performed by playwright Christopher Adams, whose play Tumulus won the Origins Awards for Outstanding New Work at VAULT 2018; and Timothy Allsop whose performance credits include Detectorists (BBC), Helen (Shakespeare’s Globe), Therese Raquin (National Theatre) and the feature film The Mummy.

Open is directed by Will Maynard whose work includes Head-Rot Holiday (Hope Theatre) and Tiger (VAULT Festival 2018).

Andrew Beckett, Artistic Director of Above The Stag Theatre, said: “One of the things I want to do with our refurbished studio is to give a new home to brilliant shows like Open that should be seen by more people. I found Chris and Tim’s show fascinating and I loved that while it looks at the challenges of open relationships it’s also brave enough to celebrate them. Dissecting your relationship in front of a live audience is a bold move and it really pays off, not least because it’s staged with wit, artistry and warmth. I can’t wait to share it with audiences here at Above The Stag Theatre.”
