Preview by Jack Foley

OPHELIA Lovibond and Penelope Wilton are to star in a new revival of David Hare’s The Bay at Nice at the Menier Chocolate Factory later this year (2019).

Richard Eyre will direct the production, which opens on March 19, with previews from March 14, and will run until May 4, 2019.

The Bay at Nice is set in Leningrad in 1956 where Valentina Nrovka must offer her opinion at the Hermitage on the authenticity of a Matisse painting. While doing so, her daughter – also an artist – meets her there.

The Menier Chocolate Factory production marks the first London revival of Hare’s work since it opened at the National Theatre in 1986.

It focuses on a mother and daughter’s fight for personal ideals and responsibilities.

Lovibond most recently starred in Nightfall at the Bridge Theatre as well as The Libertine at Theatre Royal Haymarket. She is also well known for roles in Mr Sloane and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Wilton’s previous stage work includes Taken at Midnight (Chichester Festival Theatre), A Delicate Balance and Heartbreak House (Almeida Theatre). She has won an Olivier Award, and an Evening Standard Award and starred in the hit ITV series Downton Abbey, which is heading to the big screen this year, as well as the classic series Lovejoy. Her other film credits include The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and The History Boys.

David Rintoul and Martin Hutson round out the cast. Rintoul’s credits include Much Ado About Nothing at Rose Theatre Kingston, Hamlet at the Almeida and Nell Gwynn at Shakespeare’s Globe.

Hutson has starred in Titus Andronicus and Julius Caesar at the RSC and The Master Builder at the Old Vic.

Pubic booking opens at 9am on Monday, January 28.
