PATERSON Joseph is to star as Ebenezer Scrooge in Matthew Warchus’ big-hearted, smash hit production of Charles Dickens’ immortal classic A Christmas Carol. Adapted for the stage by Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), it returns to The Old Vic from Saturday, November 23, 2019 to Saturday, January 18, 2020.

Filling the auditorium to the brim with mince pies, music and merriment, this unique staging immerses the audience in this uplifting story.

On a bitter Christmas Eve night a cold-hearted miser is visited by four ghosts. Transported to worlds past, present and future, Ebenezer Scrooge witnesses what a lifetime of fear and selfishness has led to and sees with fresh eyes the lonely life he has built for himself. Can Ebenezer be saved before it’s too late?

Paterson Joseph has had an extensive career in theatre, television and film since he trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). His stage career includes working in fringe and touring venues around the country and he has spent a number of years at the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. He has been touring his play Sancho – Act of Remembrance since 2016.

Joseph’s screen work includes: Peep Show, Babylon, You, Me and the Apocalypse, Timeless and the upcoming Noughts and Crosses (TV); The Beach and In the Name of the Father (film).

Director Matthew Warchus’ numerous credits include: Present Laughter, A Christmas Carol, ‘Art’, The Caretaker, The Master Builder, Future Conditional, Speed-the-Plow (The Old Vic); Groundhog Day, The Norman Conquests (The Old Vic/Broadway); Matilda the Musical (RSC/West End/Broadway/International tour); Ghost The Musical, La Bête, God of Carnage (West End/Broadway); Deathtrap, Endgame, Our House, Much Ado About Nothing (West End); and Boeing-Boeing (West End/Broadway/UK tour).

Further casting will be announced in due course.

A Christmas Carol has set and costume design by Rob Howell, lighting by Hugh Vanstone, sound by Simon Baker, casting by Jessica Ronane CDG and movement by Lizzi Gee. Composer and Arranger is Christopher Nightingale.

A Christmas Carol is suitable for ages 8+.

Present Laughter, starring Andrew Scott, continues at The Old Vic until August 10, 2019.
