Richard II - Jack Studio Theatre

Richard II

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

WE ARE Animate are presenting a new version of Shakespeare’s Richard II at the Jack Studio Theatre from April 21 to May 9, 2020.

Mock not flesh and blood with solemn reverence.
Throw away tradition, form, and ceremonious duty.

Amidst worldwide political turbulence, England faces crisis and open rebellion. Living a life of luxury within the crumbling Palace of Westminster, King Richard is increasingly unwilling to face the calamity his failing government has created.

As the facade of power begins to dissolve around him, the dramatic downfall of an extraordinary individual begins; an individual who is in equal measures both vivaciously captivating, and excruciatingly cruel.

With a strong focus on queer representation, this production of Richard II explores the power and strength of femininity, and questions what traits are expected, and respected, in a leader.

We Are Animate have been creating ground-breaking theatre since 2012. Previous productions include Hunter & Jonny, Roughs, Love Lab and Bitesize Chekhov.

Richard II is directed by Lewis Brown, with lighting by Jack Channer, sound by Jordan Wilkes and artwork by Mark Barrow. Set will be built by David Stanley and assistant director is Harriet Barrow. Casting has not been announced.

The production is suitable for ages 14+.
