Stepping Out - Jack Studio Theatre

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

DAVID Ball Productions is presenting Stepping Out by Richard Harris at the Jack Studio Theatre – from Tuesday, June 19 to Saturday, July 7, 2018.

Dust off the tap shoes and join Mavis and an unlikely group of adult tappers as acclaimed British playwright Richard Harris takes audiences on an evening of laughter, love and passion at a North London adult tap class.

Mavis, a former professional dancer teaches the bumbling tappers but before the dancing she must mediate the dramas that erupt among this motley but loveable crew. When adversity, diversity, opportunity and ordinary come together, what is the result? A couple of time steps later and love and friendship are what really trumps this mix.

The cast will be led by Lucy Jane Adcock as Mavis. Her credits include: Miss Adelaide in Guys and Dolls (Tel Aviv), Matilda (West End), A Chorus Line (West End), Top Hat (West End and Tour); and Starlight Express (UK Tour). Further casting to be announced.

Directed by David Ball, Stepping Out is designed by Mali-Beth Roberts and has original music by Michael Webborn.

David Ball’s directing and choreography credits include: Babes in Arms and Stepping Out (Union Theatre), Sleeping Beauty (Sheffield Lyceum and Bournemouth Pavilion), Peter Pan (Assembly Halls, Tunbridge Wells), The Third Annual Musical Theatre Celebration (Palace Theatre), Aladdin (Basingstoke Anvil) and Snow White (Pavillion Rhyl).

Richard Harris’ theatrical successes include: Outside Edge (Evening Standard Award), The Business of Murder which ran for seven years at the Duchess and Mayfair Theatres, Stepping Out (Evening Standard Comedy of the Year Award, and Moliere Award for the Paris production), The Maintenance Man (Comedy Theatre) and Albert and Virginia (Arts Theatre).

His play Visiting Hour was performed as a platform production at the National Theatre. Dead Guilty played at the Apollo Theatre and his version of Ibsen’s Ghosts was produced at the Comedy Theatre. Liza Liza Liza was originally produced at the Tabard and subsequently completed a national tour. He has co-written three musicals – Stepping Out, Large As Life and West Five Story.
