THE musical version of The Bridges of Madison County is to receive its UK premiere at the Menier Chocolate Factory.

Based on the best-selling novel by Robert James Waller and subsequent motion picture directed by Clint Eastwood, it will run from July 13 to September 14, 2019.

Francesca is an Italian immigrant housewife living a happy existence on a farm in the American Midwest. However, when her family go off to the Iowa State Fair, she meets Robert Kincaid, a National Geographic photographer on assignment filming bridges in the area. Their initial friendship develops into a brief but passionate affair which has devastating consequences on all of their lives.

When it premiered on Broadway in 2014, The Bridges of Madison County won Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations.

The Bridges of Madison County has a book by Marsha Norman, and music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown (Parade, Honeymoon in Vegas, 13 and The Last Five Years).

The Menier’s production will be directed by Trevor Nunn (Fiddler on the Roof) and have set and costume design by Jon Bausor, lighting design by Tim Lutkin and sound design by Gregory Clarke. Casting has not yet been announced.

Also at the Menier Chocolate Factory: Tennessee Williams’ Deep South American drama Orpheus Descending (May 9 to July 6, 2019).
