Story by Jack Foley
EVERY
great romantic couple share at least one memorable on-screen kiss, be it DiCaprio
and Winslet on the deck of the Titanic or Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr
on the beach in From Here to Eternity.
Even superheroes get in on the act, as the will they/wont they romance between Clark Kent and Louis Lane, or even Batman and Vicki Vale, so often adds to the allure of the proceedings.
Spiderman is no exception and when that moment finally arrives, it becomes one of the movies most memorable sequences.
Tobey Maguire, star of the film, has confessed that the kiss is his favourite
scene in the movie because it comes across as sexy, sweet and romantic,
enabling audiences to see the character within the superhero as he gets
vulnerable with somebody.
(Spoiler warning): The kiss occurs after Spiderman has rescued Mary Jane from
muggers for the second time and only a few moments after Peter Parker has
attempted to confess his feelings for her.
In
typically Sam Raimi style, it is far from conventional, which adds to the
moments allure. Spiderman is hanging upside down in the rain, while
a soaked-through Dunst is trying to come to terms with what has just happened.
The two exchange brief words and then Mary Jane peels down Spidermans
mask to kiss him on the mouth, without revealing any more of his features.
She then leaves the superhero to his own devices, refusing to take the opportunity
to discover the true identity of the man behind the mask.
Th sequence is sure to become an audience favourite, but the logistics of
it made it somewhat less romantic to film.
Maguire confesses that it was tough to do, even though he is impressed with the results, given that he was suspended upside down with the water pouring down his face - and up his nose.
"I couldnt breathe out of my mouth," he said, "so I had to hold my breath while kissing her."
To get by, the actor would sneak breaths out of the corner of his mouth but
he still had time to enjoy it.
