Well worth taking a gamble on Dirty Vegas

Review by Paul White

DIRTY Vegas made a massive impact on the charts when they released their single, Ghosts, at the height of the summer, a tune full of chilled beats and melody dripping vocals. Now, we have the chance to listen to their first, self-titled, long player.

A three-piece from Kent, Dirty Vegas have come together to create an album which combines a mish mash of different styles, ranging for the chilled Ghosts to the much harder, dancefloor fillers such as Throwing Shapes.

It would have been very easy for Dirty Vegas to release an album where all the tunes were in the same style, but instead they have come up with one that is not only well produced, but also takes you on a musical journey.

In a way, it's like being at a club - you get the highs and the rushes from the harder tunes and the come down with the more chilled tunes, which is why the album works so well for the listener.

Days go by is a stunner of a track, full on from the word go, and has some nice bongo breaks, high in the mix. This will go down well in the nightclubs, from the Balearics to Bolton! The only thing I would say about the vocals on this, however, is that it seems that the Vocoder tool in the studio has been played with, which is no bad thing, but it seems that a lot of dance acts are using this technique and it would be nice to hear some different effects on vocals.

Candles brings on a collation of slow, dirty soulful beats and although it is not the usual track you would expect to hear from them (judging from the releases so far), it is a worthy album track.

This long player is one of the most uplifting releases of the year so far, not just because their singles are good, or because they are the new cool thing to be in to, but because of the musical content on the album. It shows that they have put a lot of thought into making the best music they can, while also thinking about the listener in the process.

Check it out!!
