Review: Jack Foley
LENE Marlin says that her latest album, Lost In A Moment,
is reflective of her success and how much life has dramatically
changed since finding it.
The Norwegian singer-songwriter sold 1.8 million copies of her
debut album, Playing My Game, while its follow-up, Another
Day, was another huge hit.
In the ensuing time, Marlin has learned to cope with her new-found
fame and has even found happiness, citing that it's difficult
to describe her latest work.
What's beyond doubt, however, is that she is very satisfied,
given that 'there was pure happiness' when she was making it.
That sense of happiness will probably translate well to fans
of the artist's previous work, or those who enjoy a good ballad.
Marlin's vocals are perfectly suited to breezy pop songs and
more serious heartfelt matter - although her style is undoubtedly
more appealing when keeping things lighter.
Tracks like What If display a dreamy style that's easy
to embrace, rather like The Cardigans, while recent single, How
Would It Be, is a shimmering delight with its whimsical outlook
and distinctly summery flavour that harks back to the classic
rock style of, say, Fleetwood Mac.
Slower, more pensive ballads like Leave My Mind, with
its violins, also display strong production values and have, no
doubt, benefited from the presence of the Stargate team (who have
previously worked with Cher, Mariah Carey and Mary J Blige).
But while the quality of such tracks is beyond doubt, especially
vocally, they are strictly for the romantically enclined and,
rather like many of the tracks on Another Day, struggle
to appeal to a broad fanbase.
Worth listening out for, however, are the tracks Never To
Know, with its strings and beats merged together seamlessly
and a vocal style reminiscent of The Corrs, and the haunting piano
ballad, It's True, which finds Marlin at her most bittersweet.
The album concludes with the melodic rocker, Wish I Could,
which unfolds with an Enya-like intro, before giving way into
a good old fashioned country-style effort that leaves you feeling
suitably bright.
Lost In A Moment is no classic but it's bright moments
are certainly worth recommending.
