Story: Jack Foley
RADIOHEAD will do battle against The Darkness and The White Stripes
in this year's NME music awards.
Thom Yorke and co lead the nominations field, with five in total,
including best British band and album, while their biggest challengers
weigh in with four each. The Libertines and Kings of Leon may
also be worthy of an outside bet, with three nominations apiece.
Radioheads nominations haul follows the release of their
highly-acclaimed Hail to the Thief long-player, and helped to
secure nominations for best single, live band and video, while
ever-popular, The Darkness, are mentioned for best British band,
single, live band and video - even though their album, Permission
to Land, failed to get a nod.

That category will be fought out between Hail To The Thief, The
White Stripes' Elephant, Kings Of Leon's Youth and Young Manhood,
Muses Absolution and
The Strokes Room On
Fire.
The White Stripes will also compete in the best international
band, single and video categories.
The best new band will be fought out between Aussie rockers,
Jet, The Kings Of Leon, Funeral for A Friend, The Thrills and
the hotly-tipped Glaswegians, Franz
Ferdinand.
On the solo artists front, Justin Timberlake has been pitted
against the likes of Pink and Har Mar Superstar, Ryan Adams and
Damien Rice for best solo artist.
The winners will be announced, in London, on February 12 and
provide a nice counter-balance to the chart-fixated Brits. According
to the NME, a record 25,000-plus votes had been cast by readers
this year.
