ONE of the coolest live events of the summer in the capital has
to be the Meltdown series, at the Royal Festival Hall, fronted
this year by the legendary Lee 'Scratch' Perry.
Featuring a heady mix of the known and the obscure, this year's
Meltdown looks set to become one of June's hottest tickets, featuring
the likes of Macy Gray, David Holmes and the Fun Lovin' Criminals
among the enticing line-up.
Taking place from Sunday, June 8, until Monday, June 30, the
tickets went on sale this week (May 1) and early booking is strongly
advised.
Lee 'Scratch' Perry started out in the '60s as an arranger and
engineer for Coxsone's Studio One, and has since become the foremost
avant-reggae producer in the world.
His hard bumpity groove and use of African rhythms drew the absolute
best from the best musicians of the classic mid- '70s, from the
Wailers to the Heptones to Max Romeo and, of course, Bob Marley.
Though he has faded from the scene with the passage of time,
he remains a hugely influential reggae master, and has enjoyed
collaborations with The Beastie Boys (at a concert for Tibetan
freedom) and the Mad Professor.
It is little wonder, therefore, that he has managed to amass
such a wide cross-section of acts for his Meltdown. See opposite
