New at the Halfmoon, Putney - March

Preview by Paul Nelson

Winter's (almost) over, and this March The Halfmoon has some fantastic bands, with something to suit all genre tastes. Here's a brief look...

Highlights this month

Eddie & The Hot Rods + The Sweeney - Saturday, March 15, £6
Eddie & The Hotrods are often accused of accidentally starting punk. Their energetic brand of RnB and 'pub-rock' in the 70's swept the nation, giving them hits such as 'Do Anything You Wanna Do' and 'Teenage Depression'. On tour, they once had The Ramones as their support act, and another time The Sex Pistols opened up for them - ending in an on stage brawl which the tabloids lapped up. Back and rockin' as ever, the Hotrods now feature Richard Holgarth (John Otway & The Big Band) on guitar. With The Sweeney in support this gig is simply un-missable.

The Cornerstones - Friday, March 21, £4 (pictured)
The Cornerstones (formerly Fourth Volume), were formed in London in 2002. Think Crowded House, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Jimmy Webb and you wouldn't even touch half of what makes this band tick. Built on a touch of the old school with rock solid foundations, The Cornerstones have well-crafted songs with a touch of soul and delivered hand wrapped with an abundance of passion and feeling. If you love big vocals and big songs, backed by bigger harmonies then this may well be the band that you have been searching for all your lives! In 2002 The Cornerstones supported Oasis, Shed Seven, Proud Mary and Pureessence in the UK. Click here for The Cornerstones website... Wilko Johnson - Saturday, March 22, £8

Wilko Johnson started his musical career as guitarist and songwriter for Canvey Island RnB outfit Dr Feelgood, before joining Ian Dury & The Blockheads. He then went on to become one of the UK's most respected blues and RnB solo acts, with a live reputation second to none. Performing as a three piece with the highly respected Norman Watt-Roy on bass (Blockheads, Gabrielle) and Stephen Monti on drums (Jesus & Mary Chain), the Wilko Johnson band pack a heavy RnB punch. Highly rhythmic, highly energetic, and Wilko's performance can only be described as insane. If James Brown is the godfather of soul, then Wilko is the godfather of punk. Wilko was a Halfmoon resident a few years back, and this is his first gig back in a while. Hence, it is expected to be a busy one, and advance tickets are essential to avoid disappointment.

Muskoka - Friday, March 28, £4
Lo-fi electronics and post-grunge guitar styles are used to create beautifully complex songs from simple instrumentation. With divine textures and sounds yet down-to-earth lyrics and sentiment, Muskoka have a sound library of which Vangelis and Radiohead would be proud. Deep bass, funky beats, and odd passionate outburst of rockin' guitar; what more could you ask for? It is these dynamic sound-scapes and rhythmic textures that have had Muskoka appear live with Gay Dad, The Lo Fidelity All Stars and The Unbelievable Truth, and seen their debut album 'Isn't It Beautiful Out There' receive critical acclaim. Highly recommended.

The Hamsters - Saturday, March 29, £8.50
Fifteen years and still on the road, The Hamsters are simply unstoppable. Although primarily performing their own material, they are widely regarded as the leading interpreters of the music of Jimi Hendrix and, more recently, ZZ Top. The trio were recently voted the UK's best blues band by readers of Blueprint Magazine - the blues scene's essential read. Guitarist Snail's Pace Slim was also voted one of the top 100 guitarists of all time in a radio poll on LBC. If you've never seen the Hamsters before, prepare to be converted.
' They're fabulous: one of Britain's very best live bands' (Bob Harris, Radio 2)
' Nobody does the music of Jimi Hendrix and ZZ Top better (apart from the real ZZ Top)...one of the best live blues acts in the UK' (The Times). Buy tickets at www.halfmoon.co.uk, or find out more at www.thehamsters.co.uk
