Reviews by Paul White, Jack Foley & Simon Pinion
INDIELONDON is proud to present its rundown of the singles we have been listening
to over recent weeks, complete with release dates, our verdict, and a link
to buy them (just click on the record cover).
MONDAY, APRIL 29
MOBY
- WE ARE ALL MADE OF STARS (Mute):
Moby's eagerly-anticipated follow-up to his ultra-successful Play album is
a staggeringly simple, yet effectively catchy, three-minute track which manages
to combine pop, dance and that familiar Moby sound to quite brilliant effect.
It also bears something of an Eighties feel, while managing to sound fresh
and exciting - a brilliant teaser for the new album, 18, which is released
in the next few weeks. Expect it to be massive for the bald genius (whatever
Eminem thinks!!!). Two CD singles feature remixes from the likes of Timo Maas,
trancer Tiesto and French pop houser Bob Sinclair, as well as new tracks,
Landing and Soul to Love.
THE
PEOPLE - THE MUSIC (Hut):
The North of England continues to provide the home for some of the best new
rock acts of the moment and, following in the steps of Oasis, The Stone Roses
et al, are The Music, a gutsy, loud, brash and totally in-yer-face band which
look set for great things. The People, the band's third release (and their
best), is a guitar-laden, intense, and amazingly catchy single (part of a
four-track EP), which positively screams out to be played loud.

CHEMICAL
BROTHERS - THE TEST/COME WITH US:
Double A sides from quality outfits are usually worth the purchase price -
and this is no exception. Ex-Verve frontman Richard Ashcroft's vocals help
turn The Test into something special (as he did with UNKLE's Lonely Souls),
while Come With Us marks the harder side of the Brothers, giving this single
two contrasting styles. If you haven't got the album already, buy this! (CD
also features the Fatboy Slim remix of Come With Us).
IDLEWILD
- WORLD IN YOUR ARMS (Food):
Still criminally under-rated by the vast majority of the record-buying public,
Idlewild return with another terrific single which, while hardly groundbreaking,
is the type which is sure to have you singing along to its idyllic chorus.
As feisty and moody as ever, this marks a welcome return and bodes well for
the new album. Just play it loud, ok?
SUGABABES
- FREAK LIKE ME (Island):
Hard to believe, but this single started life as a Richard X (Girls On Top)
bootleg. It is now one of the most played singles on any radio station, carrying
that rare distinction of being able to appeal to listeners from XfM and Kiss,
as well as Capital and Radio One. The track brilliantly manages to meld together
Gary Numan's 'Are Friends Electric?' with the girls' own cover of Adina Howard's
r'n'b classic 'Freak Like Me' and is essential listening for anyone who digs
the current 80s revival. The CD features the We Don't Give A Damn Mix and
the video.

MONDAY, APRIL 15
DOVES
- THERE GOES THE FEAR (Heavenly):
Doves' eagerly-anticipated latest single, There Goes The Fear, harks back
to the glory days of indie music making with its instantly catchy guitar rifts
and regular drum beat.
Epic in scale, and bold in its departure from usual Doves material, this is
also notable for being released on the same day as The Hindu Times (Oasis)
and for the fact it will be deleted after just 24 hours. We suggest you rush
out and buy it. This is, without doubt, the single of the week (no mean feat
given the talent it is up against) and a surefire contender for one of the
tunes of the year.
OASIS
- THE HINDU TIMES (Big Brother):
The Gallagher brothers are back with a big, bolshy and frustratingly catchy
new single, harking back to the glory days of earlier efforts such as Morning
Glory and Definitely Maybe. Could this be the long-awaited return to form
for the Manchester bad boys? It sounds like it...
And who cares if it still sounds similar to earlier work. When rock n roll
makes you feel this good, there are no complaints. Great guitar rift, by the
way.
HAVEN
- 'TIL THE END (Radiate):
The rapidly emerging kings of angst-ridden song-writing, Haven are quickly
carving a niche for themselves as one of the must-see acts of the moment.
Not great when compared to some of the singles released this week, but a great
listen after a long, hard day at the office and one that is sure to have you
singing along to it.
NEW ORDER - HERE TO STAY (London):
New Order are currently on a roll at the moment, following a great comeback
single, album and tour. This track, remixed by the Chemical Brothers and taken
from the 24 Hour Party People soundtrack, manages to combine the best of the
old with the best of the new. The unmistakeable New Order sound is present,
together with that Chemical Brothers' magic, so expect this to be huge. Click
here

THE STREETS - LET'S PUSH THINGS FORWARD:
Everyone seems to be raving about The Streets at the moment, but I can't
think why! This is a beat backed up by some guy talking. Anyone could do it.
I simply want to hit the off switch whenever this comes on the radio. So go
on, slate me!
