Un-Cut and Panjabi MC show some respect

Story: Jack Foley

UN-CUT, whose album, The Un-Calculated Some, is out this week, and Panjabi MC will be performing at this year's Mayor's respect anti-racist festival, which takes place at the Dome, in Greenwich, on Saturday, July 19.

The festival, organised by Mayor, Ken Livingstone, in conjunction with the National Assembly Against Racism and the TUC South East Region, will be a unique opportunity to see them perform for free and is the only time that the Dome has been used for a free event in this way. It will be headlined by Public Enemy.

Un-cut are generating major interest, with their hybrid fusion of northern soul, big band jazz and Motown, while Panjabi MC has already established himself as a household name on the UK and international bhangra scene with his hip hop and real 'desi' mix.

Other performers on the main stage will include Rhythm Dohl + Bass, Sunship, Gregory Isaacs, Heartless Crew, JJC & the 419 Squad and Estelle.

Mayor Livingstone commented: "respect is fast becoming recognised for introducing Londoners to new stars, with Mis-Teeq and Blue in 2001 and Fallacy in 2002.

"It's great that we can attract artists prepared to support its anti-racist message. I am also delighted that respect is the first free event at the Dome.

"With a musical mix that should appeal to all ages and represents London's rich cultural diversity, respect 2003 should be one of the highlights of the Summer.

"However, let us not forget why we hold respect each year," he continued.

"This year's festival is dedicated to the memory of Stephen Lawrence, who was murdered in a racist attack ten years ago and I, with the rest of London, will be making a collective statement to stamp out racism in the capital when we attend the festival on July 19."

respect is a free event and will include a wide range of music, performance and children's activities, as well as food and drink stalls and information about trade unions, voluntary groups, charities and community organisations.

respectweek runs from July 12-19 and will include a film festival, music, theatre and other arts events; community and borough based activities; children's and educational programming.
