Review: Allison Browning
'TWAS the eve of the Labour Day public holiday, and at the Hyde
Park hotel, Lucy was a Decoy, began an inspiring night
with high energy and rocking tunes, a la Dinosaur Jnr. style.
In downbeat fashion, they were followed by Melange, whose
quirky lyrics and mish-mash of sound were not quite enough to
keep the crowd in place up front.
It seemed for some that the pool tables became more of an interest.
Melange are definitely a creative bunch, with song titles such
as Chipmunks are Crotch Fungus.
Vocalist, Byron, gives everything he's got, with amazing energy
that is captivating.
Apologies were made about not having their own equipment, and
perhaps it was this that was the cause of a slightly messy set.
This was not applicable in the case of Heathcliffe, who
clearly showed they are about to make their mark upon Perth.
The band has been working together closely recently on their
debut album and this was very evident in their performance.

Lead guitarist, Steph Edwards, left an impression putting hard
core emotion into her playing.
Vocalist, Joni Hogan, also put in a killer performance. This
female dynamo has the well-balanced angst of PJ Harvey, with the
passion of Tori Amos.
Unfortunately, at times the heavy guitars became a touch overpowering
lacking clarity, but despite this the band made it clear in a
driven performance that we will definitely be seeing more of them.
The Tigers attracted a well-sized crowd. The boys have
not performed together as a five piece for quite some months,
but showed their strength in beginning with two instrumental tracks.
Vocalist, Chris Cobilis, started off a little sluggishly but
picked up pace in more up beat songs such as smells like green
spirit (which has the unusual quirky influence of barmitzvah music
perhaps).
Keyboardist and trumpet player, Ben Basell, certainly adds an
unusual and essential element to the band and with strong guitar
work from Guy Howlett and Chris Cobilis this provides a winning
combination.
Vinyl Sundays continue at the Hyde Park Hotel North Perth,
the next being on the 28th of March with Acetate, Monday Code
and The wire complex playing.
