Story by Jack Foley
NATHAN Lane has been forced to withdraw from his role in Mel
Brooks' hit musical, The Producers, due to a back injury that
has already forced him to miss several performances.
The popular actor, who became famous for the role on Broadway,
stepped in at the last minute to replace Richard Dreyfuss ahead
of the production's spectacular launch a few months ago, but has
been forced to call it a day following advice from his doctor.

Ironically, Dreyfuss had also been
forced to withdraw due to personal injury.
Lane's role will be played by actor, Cory English, until January
10, when Brad Oscar will take over the part as scheduled.
According to Claire Storey, of the Drury Lane theatre's box office,
Lane is suffering from two slipped discs in his back and will
not be returning to the show.
The news is likely to disappoint the many theatre fans who had
rushed to claim tickets to see Lane reprise his role in the production,
which had landed 12 Tony awards on Broadway.
It is, however, still hoped that original West End star, Dreyfuss,
will be able to join the production at some point - although nothing
has been confirmed about this yet.
Lee Evans is, however, fit and able to continue in his role.
