Chelsea Theatre unveils its 2002/03 line-up

Preview by Paul Nelson

FOLLOWING their highly successful spring season, Chelsea Theatre's season for 2002/3 continues with a most interesting programme of new writing and three premieres.

The Coffee Lover's Guide to America, by Jonathan Hall (pictured, centre, with a group of actors) and directed by Nigel Townsend, is a co-production with Ytouring.

This is described intriguingly as an elegantly crafted road drama and casts a sensitive and amusing glance at the tangled and elusive nature of love and human relationships. In a coffee shop in Key West, two men meet, chilled out gym-toned Chad from Miami and happily married Joe from West Yorkshire.

Despite their culture clashes, they agree to take a trip across America together. The road they travel takes them on a journey of personal exploration and mutual discovery, in search of themselves and each other. The Coffee Lover's Guide to America is Jonathan Hall's follow-up to his hit comedy Flamingos.

End of Story, directed by John Joe Turner (first produced as Point a la Ligne by the Comedie Francaise in Paris), is an award-winning play by French author, Veronique Olmi, translated by Graham Cowley. This is the first time any of her plays has been produced in Britain.

What is it that drives normal, intelligent people to tear each other to pieces emotionally? Children's author, Lili, is a bomb waiting to go off. Her husband, Marco, makes a wrong move and gets the force of her rage. For him it is the last straw and the tables are turned, but where will the story end?

Following the huge success of Judith Johnson's last play, The Singing Group, Chelsea Theatre is very pleased to be presenting her new work, Exclude Me, which looks at the issues within education today through the eyes of a teacher at the end of his tether.

Chelsea Theatre is a small yet dynamic new writing theatre enriched by a complementary programme of arts activities, funded by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The John Lyons Trust and the Eva and Hans K Rausing Trust have funded the Chelsea theatre's recent rebuilding and relaunch of its auditorium and public areas.
