The Price is right for Mitchell at the Apollo

Preview by Paul Nelson

AFTER a revival at the Tricycle Theatre lasting approximately one month, The Price, Arthur Miller's acclaimed play, transfers to the Apollo Theatre where it opens on September 9.

Sean Holmes' production played to capacity audiences during its initial run at the Tricycle, and it stars Warren Mitchell, Larry Lamb, Des McAleer and Sian Thomas.

Solomon, a 90-year-old furniture dealer finds himself in the middle of an uneasy reunion between two long estranged brothers.

Vic (Larry Lamb) is a police officer, who sacrificed his education and ambition to take care of his ruined father.

Walter (Des McAleer), his brother, now a wealthy doctor, always puts himself first.

Solomon (Warren Mitchell) is just trying to buy the furniture their father left behind.

As they haggle over the price, memories of the past return and the resentment and heckling begin.

Soon new stories emerge, changing the past they thought they knew, and raising the price of the choices they made.

Warren Mitchell has appeared on the stage, in film and on television through his career spanning more than 40 years.

Best known for his portrayal of Alf Garnett in 'Till Death Do Us Part, he has worked extensively in the theatre in Britain and Australia.

No stranger to Arthur Miller's work, he first appeared in The Price at Sydney's Ensemble Theatre and performed his lauded Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman both in the hot production at the National theatre in London and in Australia.

Other theatre roles include the title role in King Lear at the Almeida.

Larry Lamb has starred in hit television series Our Friends in the North, A Touch of Frost and Lynda la Plante's Supply and Demand.

He has also appeared on stage at the Donmar Warehouse, RSC, Royal Court, Almeida Theatre, Barbican and in the West End.

Des McAleer continues his association with the Tricycle Theatre, having most recently appeared in Carlo Gebler's 10 Rounds, directed by Artistic Director, Nicolas Kent.

Other theatre credits include The Weir at the Royal Court and the RSC's The Rivals.

His extensive work in television and films includes major roles in Angela's Ashes, Touching Evil and MaCready and Daughter.

Sian Thomas was last seen starring opposite Madonna in Up For Grabs in the West End.

She won the Martini TMA award for Best Actress as Yelena in Uncle Vanya on its Renaissance Tour and an Olivier Award Nomination for Best Comedy Performance as Vittoria in Countrymania at the RNT.

She has also appeared in Feelgood in the West End, House and Garden at the RNT, Vanity Fair (BBC) and A Mind To Murder (ITV).

Director, Sean Holmes, has worked at the National Theatre, RSC and Chichester Festival Theatre. His credits include Richard III and The Roman Actor for the RSC, and Comedians for the Oxford Stage Company.
