As for Ying Tong, it stems
from the title of the nonsense song, Ying Tong Yiddle I Po.
Smiles' production has Milligan as the lead character who, in
order to write the best- ever episode of The Goon Show,
plans a pyjama-clad escape from a mental institution.
From there, proceedings take a downward spiral, all with the
Goons' typical 'nonsense' brand of comedy.
Ying Tong does, however, also explore the darker side
of Milligan's mind. The depression from which he suffered is thought
to have been induced by the pressures of writing The Goon
Show and is clearly reflected in the play.
Ying Tong first opened at the West Yorkshire Playhouse
last year and was warmly received by both critics and audiences.
