The Goons return to the London stage

Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

YING Tong, Roy Smiles' acclaimed play featuring The Goons, opens at the New Ambassadors theatre on February 14, 2005, with previews from February 10.

The Goons were, of course, Spike Milligan (pictured), Peter Sellers, Harry Secombe and Wallace Greenslade and will be played by James Clyde, Peter Temple, Christian Patterson and Jeremy Child respectively.

As for Ying Tong, it stems from the title of the nonsense song, Ying Tong Yiddle I Po.

Smiles' production has Milligan as the lead character who, in order to write the best- ever episode of The Goon Show, plans a pyjama-clad escape from a mental institution.

From there, proceedings take a downward spiral, all with the Goons' typical 'nonsense' brand of comedy.

Ying Tong does, however, also explore the darker side of Milligan's mind. The depression from which he suffered is thought to have been induced by the pressures of writing The Goon Show and is clearly reflected in the play.

Ying Tong first opened at the West Yorkshire Playhouse last year and was warmly received by both critics and audiences.
