The Sentinel - Preview

Kiefer Sutherland and Michael Douglas in The Sentinel

Preview by Jack Foley

FANS of Kiefer Sutherland will be licking their lips with anticipation over The Sentinel, a new thriller that finds him in the over-familiar role of having to save a US President.

Familiarity aside, there is every reason to be excited about it given the quality of the film’s cast and the positive word of mouth surrounding it.

The film co-stars Michael Douglas, as a rival Secret Service Agent, Kim Basinger, as the First Lady, and Eva Longoria, as another special agent assigned to prevent an assassination attempt.

Douglas is at the centre of proceedings, playing a disgraced special agent to the White House who endeavors to foil a conspiracy to assassinate the President despite being framed for a crime he did not commit.

Sutherland is the agent and former protege charged with keeping him at bay, while carrying out his own duties.

The film is based on the best-selling novel by Gerald Petievich, an ex US Secret Service agent who has since followed a successful career in the field of crime and political thriller fiction.

It is directed by Clark Johnson, who made his feature film debut with S.W.A.T., the action thriller starring starring Samuel L. Jackson and Colin Farrell, while Ocean’s 12’s George Nolfi provides the taut screenplay.

Aside from the obvious interest to fans of real-time drama, 24, the film marks a good opportunity to see Douglas back on the big screen for the first time in three years (The In-Laws), while furthering the career propsects of another TV star, in the form of Depserate Housewife Longoria.

The film is scheduled for a UK release on September 8, months after its US debut in April.
