Tom Cruise celebrates birth of baby girl
Story by Jack Foley
TOM Cruise and Katie Holmes are celebrating the birth of a baby girl, a spokesman for the couple has confirmed.
Actress Holmes, who is due to marry Cruise later this summer, gave birth to the couple’s first child in Los Angeles on Tuesday (April 18, 2006).
Spokesman Paul Bloch revealed in a statement that the couple “joyously welcomed” the arrival of their daughter, Suri, which comes from Hebrew and means “princess”.
The baby is the first for Holmes, 27, while Cruise has two adopted children from his marriage to Nicole Kidman.
Suri weighed 3.4 kg (7lb 7oz) and measured 50.8cm (20 inches), according to the statement.
No details were given about the birth itself, which has been the subject of much media speculation right up until yesterday’s delivery.
“Tom and Katie”, as the tabloids have dubbed them, have been engaged since June 2005 and plan to marry in late summer or early autumn.
Cruise, 43, will soon be back in cinemas in Mission Impossible III, alongside Philip Seymour Hoffman, Michelle Monaghan and Laurence Fishburne. He is currently in the middle of promoting it.
