Review: David Munro
ROSES are red and, Pumpkins are Blue - and in Putney, at least,
have been so for three years now.
On the evening of August 8, 2002 the 'Blue Pumpkin' celebrated
its third year of good food.
Describing itself as a Brasserie Café Bar, it is in effect
a charming and inexpensive licensed restaurant a stone's throw
from Putney Station, where, for lunch, you can get a set menu
ranging from £7.50 for a one course meal, to £11.50
for three courses. For this one has the choice of Marinated Mushrooms
- Warm leek tomato and goat's cheese tart or Crab cakes to name
but three of the starters.
Of these the most popular in my party were the crab cakes, although
your humble servant preferred yet another starter, namely the
warm bacon and avocado salad, which did just that to the cockles
of his heart.
An excellent aperitif for the main course of grilled marinated
breast of chicken or, if you would prefer - Minute steak (cooked
to a T) - Salmon Salad Nicoise, Chicken Risotto or Moroccan-style
Lamb Burghers (sic); tho' the latter were perhaps a little too
full of eastern promise for me - good as they were.

Then there is an Omelette for those with less exotic desires.
If, after all this, another course calls, there is a good simple
list of desserts, from Apple pie; Cheesecake; Strawberries with
ice cream, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.
Besides the food, a place really stands or falls by it service.
Here it stands proud. Cheerful lads and lasses make you welcome
even if they have no idea whether you are an old or new customer.
If one has a special requirement, they try to accommodate this,
such as serving in the reception area if there is a disabled guest
who can't manage a table. Oh! Yes, the décor is pleasant
and they will turn down the music if asked. All in all, a good
lunch was had by all. AND you get a very good dinner too!
