Say G'Day to the Outback Steakhouse, Wandsworth

Review by Ethan Shaw

A NEW Aussie-style restaurant in Wandsworth - which serves up the most delicious steaks this side of Ayres Rock - is also proving a generous supporter of charity.
The Outback Steakhouse opened the doors to its Riverside Complex base recently with a gala bash to raise vital funds for Wandsworth's Cancer Resource Centre.
Guests to the restaurant, which is renowned across the US for offering a feast of genuine Oz fodder without compromising the superb quality, raised over £10,000 at last month's bash.

The first restaurant to be opened in the UK, the Outback ethos - meaty portions of steak, shrimp, burgers and salads all served up with a smile and an unrivalled knowledge of the food - has transferred to Wandsworth well.

"The most important thing when going out for a meal is to have a good time, so we make sure our staff are fully trained up on everything we serve so they can give that extra bit of enjoyment to our customers," Outback proprietor, Mark Megannety, told IndieLondon. "The portions we serve are big, that's how they like them in America, but we make sure the quality remains. Anything you don't eat you can always take home in a doggie bag," he added.

The menu reads like a tour of Australia: from the Aussie-Tizers (featuring the world famous bowling ball-sized `Bloomin Onion'); through Bonzer Salads, Land Rovers, Barbie Grills, Down Under Favourites, and ending the trip on good old dessert. Conquering it takes stamina and a healthy appetite, as the guests to the charity gala found out.

"It was a very exciting night for us," Mr Megannety added. "It was a fantastic success, everyone had a great night out in a good cause."

Cash was also raised for national charity Cancerlink, but David Wakefield, chairman of the Cancer Resource Centre, explained that the money for the smaller Wandsworth charity will be vital to restore activities which have recently been cut back. "It was a fantastic evening and the generosity of Outback was quite amazing and exceeded our expectations," he added.

The generosity is reflected in the portions on offer - with Gold Coast Coconut Shrimp, Rockhampton Rib-Eye steak, Ribs on the Barbie, and Brisbane Shrimp Saute proving firm favourites.

"It's all good stuff and I stand by my record of having no complaints. There are big plans for Outback to take England by storm and we are just glad that we are the first one to open and hope we can build on the success we've had so far," Mr Megannety concluded.
