It's sex, sex and more sex for Dannii Minogue

THERE'S no questioning the concept behind Dannii Minogue's new album, from
the lyrics of Put The Needle On It, 'come inside, you're drippin'
desire, let the music make you rise up
' to the unabashed Vibe
On, 'why don't you show me you're powerful, I, I put in xxx batteries
so you'd give me something wonderful
'; not to mention more than
her fair share of scantily clad writhing in the videos; it's quite clear this
is all about sex, sex and more sex.
What Dannii is delivering with her new album, Neon Nights, is classy,
well-produced pop, though you'd best not try looking beyond that. In the same
ilk as Madonna's (and, dare I say it, Kylie's) latest efforts, it borrows
a lot of ideas from 80's synthesized dance music. This is an album with plenty
of good tracks that'll get you up on the dancefloor, and boasts more originality
than much of the R&B that's dominating the charts at the moment.
Highlights include her singles Put The Needle On It, and I Begin
To Wonder. Both are incredibly catchy, and guaranteed to get you moving.
Give Me Just A Piece Of Time is a Moloko-influenced, funky track, with
a great, heavy synth bass line.
Fans of 80's Jazz funk will love For the Record; it wouldn't sound
out of place on a Pure Groove compilation.
With no pauses between tracks, it really is non-stop party music, and builds
to a climax with the popular Riva trance track, Who do You Love Now?
featuring Dannii's vocals.
The only real low points are On The Loop, which just seems to go on
forever, and has no discernible originality, and It Won't Work Out,
the only slow track of the album. The Minogue sisters just don't suit ballads,
they're pop through and through, and Dannii's voice sounds weak and grating
without the support of a good beat.
As much as you can try not to compare Dannii to her sister, there's no denying
some huge similarities. For a start, their voices are more similar than ever,
both choosing a breathy style of singing, and both heavy on vibrato. They've
also both pushed their images forward as their main selling points, and it's
no wonder that Dannii has chosen such an overtly sexual image for her new
campaign - after all, she's competing with 'that bottom'.
This is one for the girls to listen to, while getting ready for a big night
out on the town. If your boyfriend's getting fidgety, you can always sit him
down to watch one of the three videos included on the CD - I'm sure he won't
object to the pole dancing, but watch out for Dannii drying her arm pits under
a hand dryer - am I missing something?
