Beyonce, Jay-Z & Outkast head Grammy nominations

Story: Jack Foley

IT probably comes as no surprise, but rap and R&B dominate the 46th Grammy award nominations, with ever-popular Beyonce Knowles, rapper, Jay-Z, and OutKast each leading the field with six nominations.

Nine further artists share five nominations, including controversial rapper, Eminem, teen favourite, Justin Timberlake, and Missy Elliott.

The Grammy nominations were announced on Friday, December 5, by artists including Dido at a press conference at the Beverley Hills Hilton, and will be presented at a ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 8.

Beyonce heads up the record of the year category, with her timeless single, Crazy in Love, but she faces stiff competition from the Blackeyed Peas/Justin Timberlake collaboration, Where is the Love?, which enjoyed a long stint at number one in the UK, as well as from Coldplay's timeless Clocks (from A Rush of Blood To The Head), Eminem's Lose Yourself (from 8 Mile) and OutKast's excellent, Hey Ya.

Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams have three nominations each, for their work together as the production team, The Neptunes, having collaborated with fellow nominees Timberlake and Jay-Z, among others, during the past year.

Another artist to score five nominations was rapper, 50 Cent, whose popularity has soared since the release of his single, In Da Club, while rock band, Evanescence, soul singer, Luther Vandross, and country artist, Ricky Skaggs, also bagged five nominations.

Radiohead and Coldplay head the UK contingent, with Radiohead nominated for best alternative album, for Hail to the Thief, and best rock performance by a duo or group with vocals for the song There There.

The late Beatle George Harrison is nominated in the best male pop vocal performance, best pop vocal album and best pop instrumental performance.

While other Brits to feature include David Bowie, in the best male rock vocal category, Dido, for best female pop vocal, Groove Armada, for best dance, and veterans Rod Stewart and Sting.

Fighting it out for the best rock album, meanwhile, will be Audioslave, Evanescence, The Foo Fighters, Matchbox Twenty and Nickelback.

The Grammys are regarded as the most prestigious music prize in the world, and are handed out by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

Jazz singer, Norah Jones, was last year's runaway winner, after scoring a surprise sweep, with eight awards, including album of the year, pop vocal album and female pop performance.
