Story: Jack Foley
GET your hash pipes out, enigmatic LA rockers Weezer return with
their eagerly anticipated fifth album, Make Believe,
on May 9, new single, Beverly Hills, on May 2 and four
UK dates in June.
The follow-up to the critically acclaimed Maladroit,
released in 2001, Make Believe has been produced by the
legendary Rick Rubin.
For frontman, Rivers Cuomo, he has not only served as producer
but as mentor, helping him find his way both personally and in
songwriting over the past year and a half.
Rivers is back as a student at Harvard University, studying English
and American literature and the recording of the new album has
taken place during his college breaks.
Currently listing one of his interests as ‘trying to be
a good person’, it’s safe to say Rivers is returning
as a new man. Following a stint as the band’s manager, he
has now settled into a purely creative environment, focussing
completely on writing and playing music.

The first single to be taken from
Make Believe is the rousing future classic Beverly
Hills, and no Weezer single would be complete without a witty
and wacky video, remember The Muppets, the Fonz and those Sumo
Wrestlers?
The new video is directed by Marcos Siega and was shot at the
Playboy mansion and guest stars the man himself Hugh Hefner.
As one of the most popular groups to emerge from the post-grunge
alternative rock aftermath, Weezer receive constant praise from
critics and fans for their hook-heavy guitar pop which in turn
has amassed a large die-hard fan base.
With each new release since their 1994 debut, Weezer have sharpened
their wicked edge and raised the bar in alternative pop.
Weezer have also confirmed details of short UK tour in June,
an extra Brixton date has just been added due to demand. Dates
are as follows:
June 13 – Birmingham Carling Academy
June 14 – Brixton Carling Academy
June 15 – Brixton Carling Academy
June 17 – Glasgow Carling Academy
