Rob Zombie to remake The Blob
Story by Jack Foley
HORROR maestro Rob Zombie is to direct a remake of cult classic The Blob.
Fresh from re-inventing the Halloween franchise, Zombie is determined to put a darker spin on the 1958 horror classic that originally helped to launch the career of Steve McQueen.
“My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing, that’s the first thing I want to change,” he told Variety. “That gigantic Jello-looking thing might have been scary to audiences in the 1950s, but people would laugh now. I have a totally different take, one that’s pretty dark.”
The original Blob took place in the aftermath of an object from outer space crash-landing into a field and releasing a red blob-like substance that absorbed the humans it came into contact with. It has already been remade once, starring Kevin Dillon, in 1988.
Zombie, who releases his sequel to Halloween in US cinemas this weekend, added: “Even more than Halloween, where I had to deal with accepted iconic characters like Michael Myers and Laurie Strode, The Blob is more concept than specific storyline with characters, so I can go nuts with it.”
