Smurfs movie gains director

A PART live action, part animated Smurf movie is headed for cinemas for Christmas 2010.
Raja Gosnell, of Beverly Hills Chihuahua fame, has reportedly been hired to direct the film, which will be released by Sony in 2D and 3D formats.
The little blue Smurfs were first created in 1958 by Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford and went on to spawn a line of statuettes, games, toys, theme parks and a hit TV series, which ran on NBC between 1981 and 1990.
Variety reports that Audrey Wells is currently polishing off a script for the project, which is based on an original treatment by J David Stem and David N Weiss (Shrek 2).
