The Proposal tops US box office
Story by Jack Foley
THE romantic pairing of Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds has helped Disney rom-com The Proposal to the top of the US box office with an estimated $34.1 million over the June 19-21 weekend (2009).
The figures represent the best opening of Bullock’s career, while providing Reynolds with his second blockbuster hit of the summer after X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
The romantic comedy also won the battle of the new comedies, comfortably beating this week’s other big new release, <>i>Year One, into fourth spot.
Sony’s Jack Black-Michael Cera double-header, directed by Harold Ramis, took an estimated $20.2 million to land fourth, but was unable to replace The Hangover or Pixar’s 3-D Up, which both continued their hot box office runs.
Todd Phillips’ R-rated buddy comedy The Hangover, which had topped the US box office for the past two weekends, took a further $26.9 million in its third week, to take its overall total to a clear-headed $152.9 million, while Disney-Pixar’s Up added a further $21.3 million to total $224.1 million and counting for the summer.
Up‘s success is such that it’s now coming close to surpassing Star Trek as one of the most successful films of the year – the JJ Abrams’ reboot is still a little ahead, though, having grossed $239.4 million.
