Story by: Jack Foley
BUOYED by its overwhelming Box Office success, and critical acclaim,
Spider-Man 2 has now set its sights on Oscar success, come next
February.
According to a report from the Hollywood Reporter, distributor,
Columbia Pictures, has sent Academy voters a coupon, entitling
a member and a guest to see the film on the big screen at any
AMC Theatres location, or at Regal Cinemas, in Manhattan.
The mail-out states: "While we will be sending an awards-season
screener of Spider-Man 2 later this year, we encourage you to
visit a theatre and appreciate the movie as the filmmakers intended
it to be seen - on the big screen."
The move probably comes in response to the situation that was
created last year, in light of the threatened ban on promotional
'screener' videos, which Fox Searchlight reacted to by sending
ticket vouchers to Academy members to encourage them to attend
public screenings of its films.
But last weekend, Spider-Man 2, which stars Toby Maguire and
Kirsten Dunst, was still playing in 1,907 theatres across North
America, and is now officially the summer's second-biggest movie,
having grossed more than $360 million (£200 million) in
the country.

No doubt, Columbia will be looking
to better the Oscar success of the original, which received Academy
Award nominations for its sound and visual effects.
The 77th annual Academy Awards will take place on February 27,
2005, with nominations being announced on January 25.
