SCI-FI epic WAR Of The Worlds invaded the UK box office this
weekend (July 1-4, 2005), grossing £8,644,787, including
previews of £1,116,200, in 507 theatres across the UK &
Ireland, and thereby blasting its way to the number 1 position.
With a per-theatre average of £17,051, War of the Worlds
is the biggest UK box office opening ever for Paramount Pictures.
It is also the biggest opening ever for a Tom Cruise movie and
a Steven Spielberg film.
It’s also UIP UK’s biggest-ever non-sequel opening.
The film's success wasn't merely confined to Britain, as globally
it was the highest earner with takings exceeding $200m (£114m).
In North America alone, the blockbuster took $113.3m (£64.4m)
and $102.5m (£58.3m) elsewhere between Wednesday and Sunday.
The latter figure includes £15.1m (£8.6m) in Japan
and $7.8m (£4.4m) in Spain, while in both Russia and Taiwan
it broke the record for best foreign film opening.
