Review: Jenny Coggins
WORKING with a variety of materials, from wood to plastic, the
majority of Tatty Devine's pieces are recycled.
Doing their bit for both the environment and style cause, Tatty
Devine are acing the world of accessories.
After graduating from The Chelsea School of Art, Harriet Vine
and Rosie Wolfenden set up the shop in 2001.
They quickly developed the space into a multi-functional unit,
with the shop doubling up as their workshop and offices.
It hasn't taken long for their range to catch on in the mainstream
and big stores have come knocking to sign them up.
New Look won them over and have bought them in to revive their
jewellery line and overall cool.
It has been a success, with one of their designs, a weather
symbol bracelet, becoming an instant sell-out. So visit the divine
store of Tatty where it all began
The shop itself is a colourful hot-potch of creative mess. So
much is going on in such a small space, that there's a childlike
wonder when looking around.
The shop currently houses the Autumn/Winter collection, with
the quirky concept based on fairytales, woodland creatures and
comic books. Hurry to see this as the Spring/Summer collection
will be upon us very soon.
The ranges
How does your jewellery box measure up? Bring it right up to
date with the tape measure range. Reward your sense of style with
the tape measure rosette, which is bound to win over new friends
and admirers, all for £26 (some styles are now on sale reduced
to £8). If you are truly proud of your figure, show off
your measurements with the belt for £75.
Announce your presence with speech bubbles: brooches start at
£16, rings for £10. If you are not ready to make such
a loud statement, Frame earrings are much more toned down and,
at £15, are one of the cheaper options.
If you never did master the guitar, then why not cheekily wear
one of Tatty Devine's Plectrum pieces?
Necklaces are £38 and charm bracelets go for £21.
Breathe a last bit of life into a miniskirt with the kilt pin,
£18. You can choose the plectrum colour to accessorise perfectly
with your outfit.

Continuing on from this music theme, mock records are turn-tabled
into great accessorises. Bracelets are £21 and belts are
£40. The standout piece of this range has to be the 7"
record bag, at £70 it is more expensive than your usual
record from HMV, but it will be played out far more times. Musical
notes also feature and become charm bracelets (£58) and
earrings (£18).
Hand in your name and 10 days later the postman will deliver
your very own Perspex name badges.
Choose from all the colours of the rainbow and then some: red,
green, blue and silver. At £25, it is one of the cheapest
ways to get a personalised item and is an updated way to wear
a name necklace and follow Carrie Bradshaw's stiletto footsteps.
Perfect for these last few months of Winter is the knitted range.
Completely useless knitted watches (£46), will keep wrists
far cosier than any Rolex ever will. And they are a great talking
point when cute strangers ask for the time.
When Tatty Devine venture away from the familiar grounds of accessories
into full-on fashion the magic spell is somewhat lost.
Jumpers are a whopping £78 and go as far as £90,
and are really not worth parting with a week's worth of rent for
(however, some are on sale now, for a more realistic £25).
The T-shirts are much better, and go for £30.
Other Designers
Mark Pawson's range of badges are a really quirky and witty way
to make a statement on the cheap.
The 'wear more badges pack', proclaiming, 'I don't wear badges',
are bound to raise a smile from the grumpiest of people.
The 'maps pack', including a London Underground-esque map, mean
you should never get lost again. These go for £3 (small)
or £5 (large).
Chicks on Speed are both designers and a rock band. Tatty Devine
are the only stockists of their range. There are COS versions
of the plectrum range, as well as shopper bags for £15,
and knickers for £19.
Every month there is a new exhibition in the shop.
Past shows have included Mark Pawson papering the whole shop
in images and screen prints by Chris Watson. These are every bit
as interesting as the jewellery. Visit regularly to keep updated.

!!! A hidden away shop has just emerged, tucked away in Soho.
Still fresh from the smell of paint this mini-me shop stocks the
main range of both Tatty Devine and Chicks on Speed. The buzz-in
door is slightly off putting compared to the thrown-open doors
in Brick Lane, but the atmosphere once inside is easy going and
helpful. It's a bit hidden away, in Smith's Court. Walk down Brewer
Street and find the alley opposite Great Pulteney Street and It's
just tucked away down here. !!!
