Bond 22 is given a name

Daniel Craig in Casino Royale

Story by Jack Foley

THE 22nd James Bond film is to be called Quantum of Solace, producers have confirmed.

The title, although rather obscure, is taken from one of a collection of short stories by Ian Fleming, creator of the 007 series, and published in 1960.

Although closely guarded, the plot is thought to pick up in the aftermath of events in Casino Royale and finds Bond on a new mission to infiltrate a drug ring flooding Britain with heroin.

Early footage of the movie was shown to a select group of journalists (not us!) at a press conference at Pinewood Studios, where the movie is being shot, when new Bond girl, Ukrainian actress Olga Kurylenko, fielded questions.

According to reports, the footage included an explosive stunt inside an art gallery in Siena, Italy, that showed Bond – once again played by Daniel Craig – swinging on a rope and another involving a meeting between M (Dame Judi Dench) and 007 in the snow.

Filming on the movie, which is being directed by Marc Forster from a script by Paul Haggis, has been ongoing since November.

Also joining the cast for this 22nd outing is French actor Mathieu Amalric, who will play Bond’s main adversary. Amalric is previously best known for his acclaimed performance as real-life paralyzed stroke victim Jean-Dominique Bauby in Julian Schnabel’s Oscar-nominated The Diving Bell & The Butterfly, which opens in UK cinemas on February 8.

And St Trinian’s Gemma Arterton is to play an MI6 character called Fields. She revealed at the press conference that she does get to share a love scene with Craig.

Quantum of Solace is due to open in UK cinemas on November 7. Find out more or view photos from the press conference
