For Your Consideration - Preview

For Your Consideration

Preview by Jack Foley

ANY new film from Christopher Guest, the creative maestro behind comedies such as Best In Show and A Mighty Wind, is worth checking out and his latest, For Your Consideration, looks like continuing the trend.

Having already cast his mock-umentary eye over the music industry and dog shows, Guest now takes aim at the film industry and assembles the usual suspects to poke intelligent fun at the expense of the rich vein of absurd behaviour that makes Hollywood – and many of its key celebrities – so fascinating.

By usual suspects, we mean Guest himself, Catherine O’Hara, Harry Shearer, Parker Posey and, of course, Eugene Levy (who’s also fondly remembered as the father from the American Pie series).

The film follows the fortunes of Guest’s indie director, a character furnished with unfortunate hair and mandatory pseudo intellectual specs, as he tries to make a very bad period drama.

Entitled Home for Purim, the film is set in a Jewish household in the 40s – but when the lead actors discover that they’re being tipped for awards, their lives on and off set are turned upside down.

The film promises to be among the funniest entries at this year’s London Film Festival (besides Borat, of course) and is said to feature “an ensemble of gloriously, hilariously flawed characters” as it pokes fun at the media circus that both fuels and feeds off any awards season.

Hell, in a role reversal from his Extras persona, there’s even a role for Ricky Gervais as the head of a studio specialty division.

As with most of Guest’s films, though, there’s also room for perception and poignancy – making this more than your average run-of-the-mill Hollywood comedy/satire.

The film is showing at the London Film Festival on October 28 and 29 (Odeon West End 2 and 1, respectively, at 6pm and 4pm). So book early to avoid any disappointment.
