Superman Returns - Early reviews say it soars

Superman Returns

Story by Jack Foley

IS IT a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s critics, actually, soaring with glee after being shown an early screening of Superman Returns.

Bryan Singer’s blockbuster is due to open in UK cinemas on July 14 but a select number of UK and US journalists have been lucky enough to see the movie and the word is nothing but good.

Empire, for instance, described it as “a worthy successor to Superman: The Movie and Superman II, if never quite as much fun. A darker take on Superman, the polished, character-driven narrative and Routh’s fine performance ensure that the Man Of Steel will remain a magnet for moviegoers”.

While the Hollywood Reporter wrote that it’s “a heartfelt Superman movie that plays to a broad audience thanks to an emotionally troubled Man of Steel”.

Variety, meanwhile, stated: “Grandly conceived and sensitively drawn Superman saga. Sure to rate with aficionados alongside Spider-Man 2 and, for many, Batman Begins on the short list of best superhero spectaculars…One can praise newcomer Routh very highly indeed.”

And The Boston Herald declared: “Singer & Co. can be content knowing they’ve managed not only to resurrect an American icon but done it with smarts, grace and even poetry.”

Australian website, Dark Horizons, opined: “Director Bryan Singer has crafted a visual tour-de-force, a movie that succeeds in balancing eye popping 21st century visuals, with the heart and soul of a story-driven epic.”

While Harry Knowles, of Aint It Cool News, said: “This is the film I was hoping and dreaming for… The film is filled with love for more than just the previous movies, but the comics and even the classic George Reeves television show. This honors them all, while doing its own wonderful thing”

And, finally, Hollywood Elsewhere, revealed: “There’s an airborne action sequence in particular that delivered, for me, the greatest sensory thrill I’ve ever experienced from a mainstream movie in my life.”
