Green Street - Marc Warren interview

Compiled by: Jack Foley

Q. Was it nice for you to play a character that has layers that are slowly revealed throughout the film?
Marc:
Has it got layers? Ok, good. I think what I liked about it is, cos I've played a lot of nutters early in my career so it was nice to be a reformed nutter. That was the attraction for me and, plus, I got offered it, so...

Q. On the subject of the hooliganism, the production notes suggest that you have friends, perhaps, that like to venture into this world?
Mark:
Did I say that? I'm really going to have to think about what I say. I have met a couple of people who are quite interested in that. He's told me about the pre-arranged fights and the clothing that they wear. Yeah, they meet up in graveyards or wherever and just beat the crap out of each other.

Q. Did that help inform the back story of your character?
Mark:
No, I didn't look into it at all. I was aware of it from him. But I was playing someone who was reformed from it so it wasn't really relevant. It was just leading a normal life as well, which is where my character was at. So it was all in the past.

Q. Did participating in some of the fight sequences make you question how you would fare in such a situation?
Mark:
I'd run; I'd definitely run. Fighting scares me to death. But I remember somebody telling me it's not the big guys you worry about, it's the little ones. There's this saying - it's not the dog in the fight, it's the fight in the dog. It's the little ones that are the nutters because they've got more to prove. But I've never been in a fight and it scares me to death. Don't touch the face!
