THERE would appear to be no let up in the bad news surrounding
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez at the moment.
No sooner had the couple confirmed they have split, than the
annual Golden Raspberries promptly served up some more unwanted
publicity, by lavishing Gigli, the
film on which they met, with nine Razzie nominations.
Martin Brest's critically-mauled landed nods for worst film,
worst actor (Affleck), worst actress (Lopez), worst supporting
actress, worst screen couple, worst director, worst screenplay
and worst supporting actor, for both screen legends Al Pacino
and Christopher Walken, who appear in the film.
Gigli was closely followed by Mike Myers’ The
Cat In The Hat, which landed eight nominations, and which
met with near universal derision after it was released prior to
Christmas. The film is based on another of Dr Seuss’ acclaimed
children’s classics.
Charlie's Angels 2 also
came in for some flack, with both Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz
competing against each other for the dubious honour of worst actress,
while Demi Moore, who played the villain of the piece, is also
in line for best supporting actress.
In what is proving to be a torrid time for Affleck, however,
his worst actor nomination was split between all three films he
appeared in last year, including Daredevil and Paycheck - although
he was not alone, as both teen idol, Ashton Kutcher, and former
Oscar winner, Cuba Gooding Jnr, both shared nominations for a
trio of bad performances.
And there was no let up for all-time Razzie champion, Sylvester
Stallone, who received his thirtieth nomination, gaining recognition
for five appalling performances in the same film, namely Robert
Rodriguez’s Spy Kids 3-D!
Commenting on the nominations haul for Gigli, which could well
sweep the board, Razzies founder, John Wilson, described the film
as ‘an embarrassingly bad movie, and, unfortunately, it's
not a fun bad movie’.
The awards will be handed out the day before the Oscars.
