Story: Jack Foley
Sir Paul McCartney is to open and close Live 8 in London, according
to various leaked sources.
The former Beatle will open proceedings at 2pm by singing a duet
of Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club with U2, before
drawing things to a close with The Long And Winding Road just
ahead of the star-studded finale.
Irish rockers U2 will be second on the bill, before jetting off
to Vienna for a gig later that night, and Coldplay will be third,
before they also jet off to Glasgow for the latest date on their
UK tour.
As part of their set, Chris Martin and co will be joined by ex-Verve
frontman, Richard Ashcroft, for a version of Bitter Sweet
Symphony – one of several surprises planned for the
day.
Madonna is to perform three songs midway through the event, further
highlights include sets from Snoop Dogg, Razorlight, REM and Keane.
The latter stages of the Hyde Park event are to be dominated
by the veterans, with The Who and a reformed Pink Floyd rocking
their way towards Macca’s finale at 8.45pm.
