Helen Mirren joins Brighton Rock remake

Helen Mirren by Charlotte MacMillan

Story by Jack Foley

HELEN Mirren and Pete Postlethwaite have joined the cast of Rowan Joffe’s Brighton Rock remake.

The original, set in the ‘30s, followed a psycho named Pinkie who seduces a waitress after she witnesses him committing a murder. It then follows the uneasy relationship that develops between them as they try to evade organised crime and the threat of the hangman’s noose.

Empire reports that Sam (Control) Riley will play Pinkie, Andrea Riseborough will play waitress Rose, Mirren will play a character named Ida and Postlethwaite will play Phil Corkery. It will also be set in the ‘60s with a more contemporary feel.

Joffe said in a statement: “We’re making Brighton Rock as contemporary as we possibly can because the story feels ‘modern’. It’s too alive, too vibrant and too relevant to be contained in the late ‘30s.”

Brighton Rock is based on a 1939 novel by Graham Greene and filming is due to commence in October.
