Tropic Thunder greeted with cheers at UK premiere
Story by Jack Foley
UK FILM fans greeted the UK premiere of Ben Stiller’s new action-comedy Tropic Thunder with cheers rather than jeers, when the comedian joined co-stars Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr on the red carpet in London on Tuesday, September 16, 2008.
Hundreds of fans packed Leicester Square to catch a glimpse of their heroes, who in turn treated them to an extended autograph signing session, as well as some tom-foolery on the green and brown, military-coloured carpet.
The scenes of jubilation came in contrast to the film’s US premiere, which was greeted with protests from disabled groups concerned about the over-use of the word “retard” in the movie.
There was also anger that actor Robert Downey Jr appears blacked up in the film, as a method Australian film star who believes in taking his performances ultra seriously.
However, when questioned about some of the controversy on the red carpet, Stiller – who co-wrote, produced, directed and stars in his dream project – dismissed many of the criticisms, stating that: “When people see it they get it that the joke is on the actors.”
Tropic Thunder follows the fortunes of a group of pampered actors who sign up to appear in an action film about Vietnam – only to find themselves in a real danger zone, with only their fake weapons for protection.
The film co-stars Tom Cruise, Matthew McConaughey and Britain’s own Steve Coogan and opens in the UK on Friday, September 19, when it is expected to emulate its American success at the box office.
Other celebrities who attended the premiere included Stormbreaker star Alex Pettyfer, Noel Clarke and England cricketer Monty Panesar.
