The Bourne Ultimatum lands $70.2 million windfall

Matt Damon in The Bourne Ultimatum

THE Bourne Ultimatum easily took the top spot at the weekend boxoffice with an estimated $70.2 million, according to early estimates.

The reportedly final film in the trilogy starring Matt Damon as an amnesia-ridden super-spy opened as strong as predicted, effortlessly knocking The Simpsons Movie into second place and eclipsing the $52.5 million that The Bourne Supremacy enjoyed in 2004.

The critically acclaimed thriller notched an estimated $26.9 million on its first day (August 3) alone.

The Simpsons Movie meanwhile fell by a steep 65% in its second week, taking in an estimated $25.6 million. The performance will be disappointing to execs at Twentieth Century Fox who had predicted strong word of mouth last week. But it’s current total gross now stands at a healthy $128.6 million.

It’s all smiles at Universal, however, where another of its movies,
the Adam Sandler-Kevin James two-hander I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry took in a further $10.5 million over the weekend to bring its current total to $91.7 million after just three weeks.

That’s not bad for a film that didn’t boast a sequel pedigree and which opened either side of Harry Potter and The Simpsons.

The Bourne Ultimatum opens in UK cinemas on August 16 and I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry is out on September 21.
