OXFORD Street is to be turned into a motorway. For pedestrians
that is.
A shopping fast lane has been in discussion for a while, but
we still haven't seen it.
The idea is to introduce a lane for all of those people who actually
have to work in the area, so they can bomb around quicker, instead
of being caught behind the speed bump that is the tourist group.

It certainly sounds like a good idea in principle, but wouldn't
it just end up like the stand to your right rule on the Tube with
unaware peeps stumbling into the wrong lane and holding up the
on flow of traffic?
And how exactly would it work with all the roads in the way
that are so difficult to cross?
Would we then need special bridges to keep everything moving
at a suitable speed?
Would we also need a speed limit: no walking below 10mph and
if you fall below the traffic police move you along for loitering?
One good thing may come of it though. It may rid Oxford Street
of the guy with the megaphone preaching against capitalism whilst
wearing a Nike tracksuit and trainers...
