The Final Destination lands second week at US top spot

THE Final Destination has held onto the top spot at the US box office for a second week despite competition from new Sandra Bullock comedy All About Steve.

The fourth film in the horror franchise pulled in a further $12.4 million over the Labor Day weekend to keep No.1, with Sandra Bullock unable to repeat the success she enjoyed with this summer’s earlier rom-com, The Proposal.

Rather, All About Steve – which co-stars The Hangover‘s Bradley Cooper – debuted at No.2 with $11.2 million following largely negative reviews.

The comedy finds Bullock playing an eccentric crossword puzzler who becomes convinced that a CCN cameraman is her true love and follows him across the country hoping to convince him that they belong together.

Another new release, Gerard Butler’s action vehicle Gamer, took $9 million to land fourth spot.

Of the current release, Quentin Tarantino’s WWII epic Inglourious Basterds continued to hold strong, pulling in a further $10.8 million and bringing its US total to $91 million. The film only needs to generate a further $17 million-plus to over-take the director’s highest grossing film to date – 1994’s Pulp Fiction, which made $108 million.

Commenting on the film’s success, Tom Ortenberg, of the Weinstein Co, told Variety: “Word of mouth continues to be strong for Inglourious Basterds among all audiences and the film has become a ‘must-see’ for almost every demographic.

“It’s a testament to the great film Quentin Tarantino delivered and we expect the movie to play strongly for the next several weeks.”

Another strong performer continued to be critically-acclaimed sci-fi stunner District 9, which also held well in its fourth weekend to shoot past the century mark with $101.3 million – that’s despite the lack of a big-name cast or director and a budget in the $30 million range!

Rob Zombie’s Halloween II dropped to sixth place, however, in only its second week of release which means that the sequel has failed to live up to the heights of its first installment, which is currently the all-time Labor Day opening champion with a four-day haul of $30.6 million.
